The first part of the Road of Trials is a pulling away from his Old Self. This takes various forms depending on whether the hero is willing or unwilling. For example, in The Godfather (1972), Michael visits and learns of his old town, Corleone. The third part of the Road of Trials is the conquering of the Outer Challenge. The Outer Challenge is a consequence of the Inner Challenge and it is the first of the four core challenges to be vanquished. In An Officer and a Gentleman (1983), Foley takes Zach outside, punishes him and makes him face up to his lack of care and respect for his fellow officers.

Every hero must experience an expansion of consciousness and the oracle's role is to push the hero towards it.
